Fujitsu, North London
RED was the lead consultant designing MEP services for this project to convert an existing warehouse into a Tier III data centre.
The data centre was to set new standards in environmental responsibility. In addition it was to be housed n a former warehouse on the Stevenage Campus and was to set new standards in resilience to become Europe’s first Tier III data centre, as certified by The Uptime Institute.
The design incorporates N+2 diesel rotary UPS and high efficiency cooling systems to maximize free cooling. RED used tried and trusted technologies in innovative ways, especially in relation to heat recovery and achieving both free cooling and highly efficient mechanical cooling. This was the first officially Tier III-certified data centre outside the US.
Among the key challenges were an extremely rapid programme, constrained budget and significant external civils work required upfront.
Fujitsu now incorporates RED innovations in all new and upgrade data centres, worldwide.
