Projects
British Multinational Banking and Financial Services Company
RED was appointed to provide full duties for the analysis, design and implementation of a complete chiller replacement within a live data centre.
Works included identification of existing issues, engineering options design and consultation, detailed design and phased plan of selected solution as well as construction monitoring and IST.
RED carried out in-depth research into the root causes of the existing chillers’ multiple faults. The solution involved a fine balance between simplification of chiller technology, improving cooling reliability, improving energy consumption and complying with extremely sensitive acoustic requirements. With the chiller technology selected, the challenge of installation on a live site was carefully planned around a combination of temporary chiller support plus a detailed and well thought through phasing plan.

Key Facts
- Free cooling, low PUE, reduced carbon footprint, low noise levels.
- The data centre has saved up to £50,000 in a month – 1,124,028.90 kWh over a year.
- During November 2016 – January 2017, 100% free cooling was achieved, with no compressors running.
- Reduction in the data centre’s PUE - down from 1.7 to 1.4.
- It is anticipated that the data centre’s full-year running figures will meet the data centre’s expectations for energy saving and carbon reduction.
